The History of Buddha Gautama in Basreliefs

Borobudur - Jatakas and Avadhanas

Jatakas are stories about the Buddha before he was born as Prince Siddhartha. Their main theme are the meritorious acts which distinguished the Bodhisattva from any other creature. The hundred of Jatakas are complied in several anthologies. The most famous compilation is the Jatakamala (Gardand of Jatakas), ascribed to the poet Aryasura (4th century A.D,.) Avadanas are similar to jatakas, but the main figure is not the Bodhisattva himself, and the saintly deeds are attributed to other legendary persons. The stories are compiled in the Divyavadana (Glorious Heavenly Acts), and the Avadanasataka (The Hundred Avadanas).
